Questions people often ask first.

Getting Started
Get in touch via the contact form. I'll reach out to schedule a brief consultation to talk about what brings you in, answer any questions you have, and see whether it's the right fit.
If something in your life feels stuck, unresolved, or harder than it should be - that's enough reason to explore it. Therapy doesn't require a crisis or a diagnosis. Many people come in because they want to understand themselves better or work through a transition.
No. The areas described on this site reflect what comes up most often in this practice, not a checklist of who qualifies. If something is weighing on you and you're curious whether therapy might help, that's enough to get in touch.
The practice has two clinicians - Avi Miodownik, Psy.D. and Maya Citron, Ph.D. Dr. Citron is a postdoctoral fellow at the practice, providing psychotherapy under the supervision of Dr. Miodownik. You're welcome to request either clinician when you reach out. If you're not sure, share a bit about what brings you in and I can help with the match. Either way, the decision is yours.
The first few sessions are a consultation - a chance to get to know each other. I'll ask about what brought you in and what you're hoping to work on. You'll have time to ask questions and get a sense of how I work. At the end of that period, you and I decide together whether to move forward and what treatment might look like.
Sessions are 45–50 minutes.
Most people meet weekly, particularly at the start of treatment. Frequency is something we discuss together based on your needs and goals.
It varies. For some people, a focused course of work over a few weeks or months is the right fit. For others, therapy is a longer-term process. Treatment length isn't predetermined - it's a collaborative decision that we revisit together based on your goals and how things are going.
We offer individual therapy, couples therapy, and group therapy. Our clinicians work with a wide range of concerns - including grief, loss, anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, relationship difficulties, chronic illness, late-life challenges, and identity. Learn more about our approaches on the Treatments We Provide page.
No. As a psychologist, I am not licensed to prescribe medication. If medication feels relevant to your care, I can discuss it with you and refer you to a psychiatrist or your primary care provider.
Logistics
Get in touch and I'll discuss fees directly. Before we begin, you'll receive a written Good Faith Estimate reflecting the agreed-upon rate for your care.
A limited number of reduced-fee spots are available for clients for whom the full fee is not feasible. Fees within those spots are set on a sliding scale based on income. If cost is a barrier, mention it when you reach out - there's no formal application, just a direct conversation.
I am out-of-network with all insurance providers, which means I don't bill insurance directly. Many plans offer out-of-network mental health benefits that allow you to be reimbursed for a portion of the session fee. I provide detailed superbills - itemized receipts with the billing codes your insurance company needs - to make the reimbursement process as straightforward as possible. Before you begin, it's worth calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking:
  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
  • What percentage of the fee is reimbursed after I meet my deductible?
  • What is my out-of-network deductible, and how much have I met?
  • Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per year?
  • Is there a maximum covered amount per year?
  • What is your usual and customary rate for psychotherapy sessions?
A detailed guide to understanding out-of-network benefits is available here.
I ask for 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Each patient has two free cancellations per calendar year - no questions asked. Beginning with the third cancellation, a fee equal to the full session rate applies, regardless of notice given. No-shows are always charged the full session fee.
Yes. I offer both in-person and telehealth sessions for individuals and couples located in New York and New Jersey. Telehealth works well for many people - and less well for others. It's something we can think through together and adjust as we go.
Yes. Everything disclosed in sessions is confidential and cannot be shared without your permission. There are a small number of legally mandated exceptions:
  • If you express intent to harm yourself
  • If you express intent to harm another person - in which case I am required to notify authorities and the potential victim
  • If there is suspected abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or person with a disability
  • If a court orders the release of records or testimony
When possible, I'll discuss these situations with you before taking any action.
